Chapter 6

Mia

When we get back to the office, everyone sends quick glances our way, careful not to look too long. I feel Alex tense and I know any progress we made today is gone. She cares too much what others think. I know she has a reputation to uphold, but that can only get you so far. She’s so determined to keep me away she’s missing the bigger picture. I’m in love with her. I didn't plan for this to happen. I came here to make a name for myself, intent on avoiding any kind of intimate relationship.

My parents were dreamers who believed they could make their crazy love work yet they failed. I chose to ignore the notion of childish romantic dreams. The thing is, they never actually loved each other and only stayed together for my sake. They turned into two bitter individuals who couldn’t stand each other. What I feel for Alex is completely different. She’s in my soul. When I told her about wanting a beach house in Florida, I pictured her with me. Waking up together and enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning as we plan our lives as a unit. I still want that and I’m not ready to give up on her yet.

I do admit I was insanely jealous at the slutty hostess, but Alex put her in her place. We’re meant to be, I know we are. I just need her to let down her guard, but that’s easier said than done. The rest of the workday goes off without a hitch and I know business is going well, but my Alex is grumpy and restless.

It’s well after nine in the evening, when I make my way to Alex’s office. I knock on the door and let myself in, finding her working on her computer. If things go my way, I’ll be stopping these long nights of hers. I send up a special thanks to my dad for teaching me about cars because a couple loose cables later and my foolproof plan is in motion.

“Hey, I’m sorry to bother, but I can’t seem to get my car to start and I seem to have lost my phone in this damn place. I’d call Amy, but I don’t know her number by heart. Do you think you could order an Uber for me?” Alex’s eyes darken at Amy’s name.

“I thought I told you to stay away from her?”

“She’s one of the only people I know here other than Jessica and Robin. They left earlier and were very lovey dovey, so I don’t want to interrupt their night.”

“You can always count on me, Mia. We’re friends after all.”

I smile innocently while my mind is screaming checkmate! “That’s true. I just hate to be a bother. If you could schedule that for me, I’d be forever grateful. I’ll wait outside.”

No sooner are the words out of my mouth before she’s standing. “No way. I don’t trust those things. I’ll take you home. I’ve done enough and have to leave here early anyway.
